Learn how to defend and counterattack.

In chess, defense is an area of study traditionally neglected, despite being one of the most rewarding and essential topics. The defensive prowess allows the player to save many midpoints and even entire points in the competition.

The high point of the defense is the launching of the counter, a skill that has characterized all world champions.

Sometimes, we need to defend ourselves from incorrect attacks, effectively rejecting and retaining winning chances. In ranked positions, both sides must carefully assess what resources to devote to the attack and what, if any, counterattack.

The main theme, however, is the case where the defender struggle for survival and must decide how to optimize their chances. Marin considers psychological factors and explains the main options available to the defense, such as simplification, cold blood with minimal effective, or positional sacrifice, among others. In each case, discussed in detail the key aspects of the resulting positions: how to defend themselves in difficult end; how to assess threats realistically; what prospects for counterplay is defending in positions having heterogeneous material, etc.
Throughout the book, the author has provided exercises, along with explicit solutions.

Mihail Marin is a strong Romanian Grand Master. He got his first big success in international chess by qualifying for the Interzonal in 1987 and has won the Romanian Championship three times and participated in the selection of his country in eight Olympics. For several years has led the magazine Chess Extrapress.
