The revolutionary William Steinitz (1836-1900) was the vanguard of the Modern School of chess at the end of the 19th century. This school embraced a new approach in its methods of investigation, analysis and evaluation, even in the form of experimentation and battle on the board. It was a decisive change that closed the so-called romantic era, where combination and tactics prevailed, and gave rise to modern chess. From here, Pritchett reflects on hypermodern authors; on the figures of the so-called Soviet dynamism; about chess in the information age (Fischer, Karpov and Kasparov) and finally about chess in the computer age (Kramnik, Anand and Carlsen). He concludes with a look at the disturbing artificial intelligence phenomenon, AlphaZero, which is capable of learning from its own games.
Craig Pritchett (Glasgow, 1949) former Scottish national champion and international master, represented his country in nine Olympics (1966-1990), four of them defending the first board (1974-1980). A gold medal winner, on top board for Scotland, at the 2011 European Seniors Championships, he continues to compete regularly in open and seniors tournaments. A chess columnist for the Scottish newspaper The Herald (1972-2006) and East Lothian Life magazine (since 2005), he has written extensively on chess, most recently specializing in the historical development of chess thought and the fascinating differences in player style. . He graduated from the University of Glasgow in History and Modern Politics.
